Time and schedule
5. Work suddenly requires a lot more time
Late nights, weekend trips, or unreachable hours that didn’t used to be part of the job, explained as new demands that appeared somewhat suddenly. Legitimate work changes happen — the signal is vagueness and inconsistency in the explanation, not overtime itself.
6. New routines that exclude you specifically
A new gym schedule, hobby, or social group that he doesn’t invite you into, doesn’t talk about with any enthusiasm, and seems to actively keep separate from the rest of his life with you.
7. Unaccounted-for chunks of time
Errands that take far longer than the errand itself should reasonably require, with explanations that are thin or shift slightly when you ask again later.

8. He’s harder to reach during specific windows
Not unreachable generally, but unreachable in a way that clusters around particular hours or days, forming its own pattern once you notice it — different from someone who’s just generally busy.
## Emotional and behavioral shifts
9. Emotional distance that doesn’t match his words
He says everything’s fine, but conversations have gotten shorter, eye contact briefer, and presence thinner in a way that’s hard to pin to any single moment. The gap between what he says and how he actually shows up is more informative than any one conversation.
10. He’s defensive about things you haven’t questioned
Unprompted explanations for where he was or who he was with, offered before you’ve asked anything, can reflect a defense rehearsed in advance rather than simple openness.
11. Increased criticism that wasn’t there before
Suddenly finding fault with things that were never an issue, or picking fights that seem to start from very little, can function as a way of justifying distance to himself.
12. He gets unusually irritated by ordinary questions
“Where were you” used to get an ordinary answer. If it now produces disproportionate irritation or a fast subject change, the reaction itself is more telling than whatever answer eventually follows.
