9 Relationship Habits That Seem Normal But Are Actually Toxic

Posted on June 22, 2026June 22, 2026

Some things in relationships get passed down as normal simply because everyone around you does them too. That doesn’t mean they’re healthy — it just means they’re common. Here are relationship habits that are actually toxic, even though they rarely get questioned in the moment.

## 1. Checking each other’s phones “just to be safe”

This usually starts small — a quick glance, justified as harmless curiosity. But routine phone-checking, even when nothing’s hidden, signals a baseline of suspicion that tends to grow rather than shrink over time. Privacy and secrecy are not the same thing, and treating them as identical is where this habit goes wrong.

## 2. Keeping score of who did more

A running mental tally of who cooked last, who paid last, who apologized first — this feels like fairness in the moment, but it quietly turns a relationship into a ledger instead of a partnership. Once keeping score becomes a habit, almost every gesture gets evaluated for its tally value instead of its actual meaning.

## 3. Using “I’m just being honest” to justify cruelty

There’s a real difference between honesty and using honesty as cover for saying something hurtful. Genuine honesty considers timing and delivery. “I’m just being honest” as a disclaimer is often a signal that the speaker already knows the comment will land badly and is pre-excusing it.
