Why Award Show Ratings Keep Declining Every Year

Posted on June 21, 2026June 22, 2026

Award shows used to be must-watch live television, the kind of event that genuinely paused a household for three hours. That cultural weight has been steadily thinning out for years, and the reasons behind why award show ratings are declining go beyond just “people don’t watch TV like they used to.”

## The results leak before the broadcast even airs

Winners are frequently reported online in real time during the ceremony, sometimes before the in-person audience has fully reacted. For a show built entirely around suspense and reveal, having the outcome spoiled mid-broadcast removes a huge amount of the reason to watch live in the first place.

## Clips replace the full broadcast for most people

The actual viewing habit has shifted: most people now experience an award show through a handful of clips the next morning — a speech, a viral moment, a fashion highlight — rather than sitting through the full runtime. The broadcast still happens, but the live audience has migrated to the highlight reel.

This isn’t unique to award shows, but the format is especially vulnerable to it because so much of the actual content — three hours of presenters, categories most viewers don’t care about, extended bits — was never the draw in the first place. The draw was always the five or six moments. Clips just deliver those moments directly now.
