## What actually changed, and what didn’t
The most accurate accounting is probably this: quiet quitting didn’t change structural power dynamics between employees and employers in any lasting way. When labor markets tightened and tech layoffs increased after 2022, employer leverage reasserted itself, and the practical ability of most workers to set the terms of their own engagement narrowed accordingly.
What did change was cultural: the language now exists, the concept has been named, and a generation of workers has a cleaner framework for distinguishing between what a job requires and what going beyond a job requires.
Quiet quitting will probably be remembered less as a movement and more as a moment when a pre-existing reality finally got a name that resonated, and the resonance itself became a form of information about how many people had been quietly living that reality without having the words for it.
